Rose Symbiology

Updated: Aug 2, 2024

I've been a fan of Rebecca Campbell's work for several years now. I grew up reading tarot cards, so they have always been a familiar friend to me. Oracle cards always baffled me a bit. In any deck I've picked up, the artwork is stunning, but the fluidity of the symbolism and interpretation really stumped me. I always knew things like oracle and tarot decks were tools to get my intuition flowing, but I still always questioned what I felt and saw. Then came Rebecca's Rose oracle. I felt such a deep connection to the artwork and - well - things just flowed. Then Rebecca offered certification in her oracle cards and I immediately signed up. This training was life changing for me, and I look forward to diving deep into her other decks and offering a variety of readings in the near future.

My favorite flower is the rose. I love the smell, and the sacred geometry of petals. The variety of colours. Being the nature lover I am, its no surprise to anyone that the first deck I chose to study was the Rose Deck. The rose has such a rich history and is a symbol rich in meaning and varies across cultures and contexts. Here are some key symbolic interpretations:

  1. Love and Romance: The rose, particularly the red rose, is universally recognized as a symbol of love and passion. It is often associated with romantic love and deep affection.

  2. Beauty and Perfection: The rose's delicate petals and symmetrical shape often symbolize beauty, grace, and perfection. This is why roses are frequently used in art and literature to represent ideal beauty.

  3. Mystery and Secrecy: In some traditions, the rose represents secrecy or confidentiality. The Latin phrase "sub rosa" (under the rose) means "in secret," stemming from the ancient practice of hanging a rose above a meeting place to indicate that what was discussed should remain confidential.

  4. Spirituality and Transcendence: In various religious and spiritual traditions, the rose symbolizes the soul, divine love, and spiritual enlightenment. For example, in Christianity, the rose can represent the Virgin Mary or the unfolding of divine wisdom.

  5. Mortality and Suffering: The rose, especially when paired with thorns, can symbolize the balance of life, highlighting the coexistence of beauty and pain, joy and sorrow. In this context, the rose can also represent the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death.

The color of the rose also affects its symbolic meaning, with different colors representing different emotions and ideas, such as purity (white), friendship (yellow), or admiration (pink).

During a reading, the reader will shuffle the cards and lay them out in a spread, interpreting the cards that are drawn based on their symbolism and meaning. The insights gained from an oracle card reading can provide clarity, guidance, and inspiration as you navigate life's challenges and opportunities. The Rose Oracle's stunning imagery can help give clear guidance in life, work, relationships, look for themes in the year ahead or help you find your path. I would like to acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This land is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship,” first signed in 1725, which established an ongoing relationship between the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik Peoples and the Crown. These treaties recognized the Mi’kmaq’s rights to their land and resources, and they remain living agreements to this day.

I also wish to honour the legacy and contributions of African Nova Scotians, whose communities have been an integral part of the province for over 400 years. These communities have deep roots, resilience, and cultural influence that continue to shape Nova Scotia today. We are all Treaty People, and we are called to live in right relations with one another and with this land.
